Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, is a hardy, upright, perennial herb with sturdy stems covered with very fine hairs. It is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). Catnip is commonly grown by cat owners for their pets, and the dried leaves are often used as a stuffing for cat playthings. The plant has heart-shaped, grayish-green leaves and dozens of small white flowers with small purple spots covering its flowering, spiky top. The medicinal components of the plant are its dried leaves and white flowering tops.
